In high school, I took several distance courses before online courses existed. I grew up in a small town and rode horses competitively, so I needed a way to have more flexibility in my schedule and still receive a quality education. These distance courses consisted of a binder of worksheets that I had to complete and mail back. Then I took an 80 question multiple-choice test at my local library and either passed the class or did not. I thought snail-mail was a ridiculous way to learn, and it’s one of the reasons why I decided to go into Education. I had the privilege of living and studying in Hawaii, where Hawaii’s indigenous and international intersections teach us so much about what it means to live in a globalized world.

During my third year as a teacher, I took the opportunity to write online history courses for the school I taught at. A decade later, I still love teaching and learning online. I think there’s an opportunity to really get to know your students in a way that you may not while teaching 35 students at the same time in a classroom. The safety of a screen often leads to more authentic sharing about who you are and what you need.

I’ve had the opportunity to work in many different kinds of schools. I’ve taught Advanced Placement and interdisciplinary high school in a traditional classroom taught online history in many different types of schools, worked in leadership for several schools, and am the founder of a school for pregnant and parenting teenagers. I’ve also had the pleasure of traveling through Europe with students, mentoring clubs, teaching yoga, being a birth doula and midwifery assistant, starting 2 businesses, and leading several large-scale educational initiatives and teams. The thing that motivates me to get up and go to work is people. I love working collaboratively to think about problems in new ways, generate solutions, and inspire each other to be our very best selves.

When I’m not at work, I’m immersed in being present with my family: my husband, 3 children, french bulldog, rabbit, and a vegetable garden. I’m active in my local community through civic initiatives, volunteering, and exploring all that my city and nature has to offer.

My vision for WorldOver is grand. I believe that we have the potential to change the world by giving our youth the tools, guidance, and permission they need to think about problems in new ways, generate solutions, and inspire each other to be our very best selves. I’m committed to fostering a positive, diverse learning community where all voices are heard and honored and work together to make our program exceptional.
