Course Description

Part 1
During the first half of the semester, students will be reading the highly acclaimed book “The Thing About Luck” by Cynthia Kadohata. This is a story about making difficult decisions and developing character. Several themes will be explored: appreciating what we have, investigating luck and what it means to be lucky, confronting fear, and taking responsibility.
Narrative and creative writing, vocabulary development, and problem-solving are embedded in the class.

Part 2
Students will read and discuss “Genesis Begins Again” by Alicia D. Williams. The main character is a young teen who must overcome obstacles and learn to love herself.

Self-love and appreciation, overcoming hardship, changing one’s mind vs. changing other people will all be topics of debate, discussion, and writing projects. Learners will identify thesis statements, use evidence to support claims, identify supporting details and counterclaims.
