Part 1: Not Just the Facts
In this course, students learn how to critically think about what they read and the facts they learn about. In the first part of the course students will read a historical fiction novel and compare it to historical research which they will present along with their analysis of the novel. During the second part of the course, students will select a topic to research that focuses on their own interests and design their own presentation of learning. Ideas for topics for the second mini-project: cars and how they work, a specific animal and how they live, world travel, how computers work, research something from history, an invention, etc. Throughout the course students will gain many ELA skills for reading, writing, researching, speaking, analysis, and critical thinking while getting the opportunity to be creative and see things from many perspectives.
Part 2: Creative Worlds
In this course, students get to explore creative writing and science. In the first part of the course, students learn about analyzing what they read by reading a grade-level science-fiction novel and writing a literary analysis essay. In the second part of the course, students will research a scientific topic they are interested in and write a creative story that shows what they learned. Throughout the course, students will gain many ELA skills for reading, writing, researching, argumentation, and using their creativity.
